Hollaway Studio is an architectural and interior design practice, specialising in the design of self-build homes, that embraces the past, the present, and the future and places people and feeling at the core of its architecture philosophy.
The self build home sector is very familiar to Hollaway and we have worked with many homeowners over the years to create a home that fits their specific requirements. We strive to create dynamic designs that reflect the surroundings of your home, focused on how people use spaces and flow through the building. We work closely with our clients, our team of architects and interior designers to realise your brief and aspirations to create a successful and harmonious self-build home experience.
Design begins with feeling – for place, for the past, for the needs and wants of the now, and for a future that matters. It listens. It empathises. It’s pragmatic. It’s an understanding that informs everything we do. It makes buildings that work – truly, beautifully. This is how we approach all self build home design projects.
Understanding and translating our clients unique vision is a fundamental part of our design process. We are extremely fortunate the team at Hollaway is made up of an extraordinary bunch of thinkers, talkers, and doers. These are the people that get buildings made.
A great example of our self build home portfolio, Haneton is the realisation of the client’s long-held family ambition to reoccupy the heart of their 80 acre farm. Taking our cue from the traditional farmstead, it consists of two simple and parallel charred timber-clad buildings, a central courtyard, and two-storey conical building formed of rammed earth – the last of which punctuates the orthogonal arrangement to create a so-called hygge suite, with a fire-pit and sunken bath on the first floor.
Hollaway’s approach to self build home design always starts with people and place. How does a building contribute to the community it will inhabit? How will people interact and engage with the architecture created in this space? Under his leadership and hands on approach Guy Hollaway has created a design-led Practice committed to innovative building solutions, with work ranging from prestigious one off commissions to large scale regeneration projects.
The RIBA award-winning hospitality design practice has built its reputation working on a wide array of projects, including a cutting-edge skate park, the world’s first heritage theme park, a bespoke artist’s studio in an open field, and a high-end seafood restaurant. The breadth of these projects may be wide, but each one brings the perfect balance of playfulness and sincerity, with a firm focus on placemaking, sustainability and the experience of the individuals who will use the space.

Critical considerations for a Self-Build Home
Building your dream home can be an exciting project. However, it requires a significant amount of planning, time, and money. It is for this reason that many new homeowners consider self build homes. The concept of self-build homes, although beneficial, can be confusing. This article acts as a guide on what to consider when choosing to self-build homes. But first, what is meant by “self build”?
The National Custom and Self Build Association defined self-build as any new construction project or design put together by the homeowner. While self-build represents a smaller percentage of home constructions in the UK, it has proven a cheaper alternative to buying an existing home as it could cost you 40% less! However, before you decide on going the self-build way, be sure to take into account the necessary considerations.
1. Budget
Your budget is a vital factor to consider when you plan to self-build. It could cost between £1,000 and £3,000 per square foot to turn your housing dreams into a reality. However, these numbers are usually influenced by location, design, specification, and so on. Fortunately, there are several ways to raise funds for your self-build project, from securing a self-build mortgage to remortgaging your estate, selling your existing property, etc.
2. Land availability
To build, you must find land. There are many platforms you can use to help you find available land. These include newspapers, TV, and radio. Be sure to consider the various elements you would like in your home, such as gardens, easy to maintain, and spacious. You should also consider the location of the land and the availability of various utilities such as water and electricity. Lastly, you should consider the size of your family and the style of home you would like to build as this may affect the land needed.
3. Structure and design
The structure you choose will have a significant impact on the performance and appearance of your completed home. However, bricks and blocks, oak, wood, thin joint blocks and structural insulation panels are common choices. Fortunately, various digital design applications make it easy for you to visualise your preferred design to see if it is compatible with your request.
4. Hiring builders and contractors
It is okay to complete your home project yourself, but bringing in tradespeople can make things easier and manageable. While you may have to research the market to find the right builders and contractors, Hollaway Studios have been recommended by many with many excellent reviews on the internet.
