Hollaway Studio is an architectural and interior design practice, specialising in house refurbishment, that embraces the past, the present, and the future and places people and feeling at the core of its architecture philosophy.
The residential sector is very familiar to Hollaway. We have designed and built many projects over the years in Kent and the Southeast of the UK. We create ambitious designs that reflect the surroundings focused on how people use spaces and flow through a building. Working closely with our clients, our team of architects and interior designers realise your brief and aspirations to create a successful and memorable guest experience.
Design begins with feeling – for place, for the past, for the needs and wants of the now, and for a future that matters. It listens. It empathises. It’s pragmatic. It’s an understanding that informs everything we do. It makes buildings that work – truly, beautifully. This is how we approach all house refurbishment design projects.
A residential architecture practice is nothing without its people, and the very best practices are those in which everyone has a voice – however different it may be. We are extremely fortunate Hollaway is exactly this: an extraordinary bunch of thinkers, talkers, and doers. These are the people that get buildings made.
Before the retrofit The Cottage was, of course, already a picture of Kentish charm. However, the many changes in the way we live today meant it was much more a winter hideaway than year-round house. Now, during the winter, the original cottage serves as retreat, a place to hunker down, get warm, and enjoy the closeness of its materiality. During the rest of the year, however, the modern extension provides the space with which to stretch, move, and make the most of a design that pours out into the garden – and back in again.
Hollaway’s approach to house refurbishment always starts with people and place. How does a building contribute to the community it will inhabit? How will people interact and engage with the architecture created in this space? Under his leadership and hands on approach Guy Hollaway has created a design-led Practice committed to innovative building solutions, with work ranging from prestigious one off commissions to large scale regeneration projects.
The RIBA award-winning design practice has built its reputation working on a wide array of projects, including a cutting-edge skate park, the world’s first heritage theme park, a bespoke artist’s studio in an open field, and a high-end seafood restaurant. The breadth of these projects may be wide, but each one brings the perfect balance of playfulness and sincerity, with a firm focus on placemaking, sustainability and the experience of the individuals who will use the space.

How Long Does A House Refurbishment Take?
Every home needs a little refurbishment project once in a while to keep it in perfect shape. Unfortunately, many homeowners are under the wrong impression that a house refurbishment project would be a nightmare filled with long delays and budgets that spiral out of control. But that shouldn’t be the case. With proper planning and the right professional assistance, you should start and finish your home refurbishment project within your budget and over a reasonable amount of time. So, how long does a house refurbishment take? To answer this question, you would need to consider these factors.
Assess the potential of your refurbishment project
You want your renovation or house refurbishment project to add value to your home while avoiding throwing money down the drain. That’s why it’s important to assess the potential of your project before you start with the refurbishment.
You should also keep an eye on everything that will cost you a lot to prepare or take a lot of time to refurbish. Also, decide whether you’re going for extensive remodelling or only targeting specific parts of the building.
Work out the cost
Before you start any house refurbishment project, you need to take the time to work out the cost, including every single expected expense. You want to ensure that this is a financially viable project that will offer more value to the property without sinking you financially. The figures you work out should give you an idea of whether you can afford to take on the project or to opt for some form of financial assistance.
How long can your home refurbishment project take?
Several factors can affect how long your project will take, ranging from financial to approval issues. Every custom refurbishment project can be one-of-a-kind with its own set of challenges, specific schedule, project scale, financial commitments, etc.
Some of the factors that will affect how long your refurbishment will last include the following:
— The size of the property and the scope of the renovation
— Construction permits
— Uncovering unforeseen issues during the project
— Budget
